State Proposes New Management Plan for Kealakekua Bay

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is now seeking public comment on management actions it plans to implement in the Kealakekua Stewardship Area starting this summer. The plan is extensive and addresses many ongoing issues specific to Kealakekua Bay. Included in these plans are actions that would directly effect the commercial and recreational use of the Bay and that will drastically limit access. Specific measures in the plan would disallow landing kayaks at Kaawaloa (the Capt. Cook Monument side of Kealakekua Bay) and recommends that kayaks not be allowed in the Bay by 2018.
